Serving as the Museum of the Historical Society of Dauphin County, this mansion was once the home of Harrisburg's founder, John Harris Jr., and later of politician Simon Cameron, Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of War.

The Mansion recently underwent an extensive renovation, enhancing the Society's ability to collect, preserve, and interpret the rich history of Dauphin County and the Greater Harrisburg area.

Visitors will enjoy and learn from a tour of the period rooms, which include a drawing room, library, office, breakfast room, nursery, bedroom, and a 1920's art deco bathroom. Some magnificent pieces of Pennsylvania antique furniture will be found here. The Carriage House is also part of the tour. In addition to the rooms, the Museum offers four galleries featuring yearly and seasonal exhibits highlighting Dauphin County history.

Throughout the year families can enjoy a variety of workshops and special events that focus on historical topics. Groups (12 or more) are also welcome.

Researchers will find a comprehensive resource at the Alexander Library, with thousands of old maps, newspapers, documents and photographs related to Dauphin County and Harrisburg.

School Groups can enjoy a Guided Tour of the Mansion, followed by a hands-on lesson in one of many subjects, including Native Americans, Early Settlers, Indian Toys and Games, One Room Schoolhouse, Sheep to Shawl/Flax to Linen (the entire process -- from sheep to clothing), and many others. Programs take 2½ hours. Classes that cannot visit the Mansion can have 1-hour hands-on programs brought to the school. There is a variety of Video and Slide Programs, as well as Resource Material for Teachers.
