The University of Pennsylvania's Morris Arboretum features 92 beautiful acres with thousands of rare woody plants. Many of Philadelphia's oldest and largest trees will be found here -- the Official Arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Before the University took over in 1932, the property was known as Compton, the private estate of John and Lydia T. Morris. Avid collectors of artifacts, plants, and garden styles, the Morrises created what has evolved into today's outstanding public garden and research center.

Visitors will enjoy a pleasant walk along the winding paths of the Late Victorian landscape garden with its sparkling streams and special garden areas. An English Landscape Park with long vistas over rolling hills, an award-winning formal Rose Garden, and a beautiful Japanese Garden are just a sampling of the special features to be discovered here.

Within the curved glass structure of the newly restored Hamilton Fernery hundreds of ferns grow amidst a miniature rock mountain near a mountain grotto, waterfall, and rustic bridge. It is the only greenhouse of its type in North America.

A variety of wildlife species makes their home in the environment of the Arboretum, including a pair of Royal Swans that produce their brood here each year. Wild meadows and native woodlands complement this man-made paradise, creating the perfect place for a family outing. Tours are Self-Guided for individuals and families, and Guided Tours are available for Groups.

Family programs include classes and workshops on a variety of subjects. Classes are normally held on Sundays. Call for the current schedule. Reservations are required. Throughout the year a number of special events are held, featuring performances, lectures, tree-oriented activities and other great things to do for the family.

School and other Groups will find a valuable resource here for an engaging Tour that can help teachers address landscaping, the environment, and other topics. Groups should have 10 or more people.
