Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary - Are We There Yet?

A conservation project of the Natural Lands Trust, Inc., this beautiful sanctuary features 200 acres of woodlands, fields and trails, and is home to a wide variety of mammals, reptiles and birds.

The forest contains six oak species with an under story of Mountain Laurel, Red Elderberry, Arborescent, Hydrangea, and Spice Bush. Conifers will also be found here. In all, there are more than 425 species of herbaceous plants, trees, vines and shrubs. The open fields and woodlands have native wild flowers.

The sanctuary offers a variety of activities for the family, as well as for groups. During the summer there are day and evening programs on many nature-related topics. The environment, natural history, habitats, wildflowers, and geology are just a few of the many public programs available. Dedicated bird watchers will enjoy participating in the annual census. The Sanctuary also includes a Natural History Museum.

Individual children can participate in any number of special programs and presentations, and Scouts can work toward merit badges here. Each year brings a different theme on which several special programs are based. Programs are suitable for grades 1 - 6. Student Internships are available, as are many volunteer opportunities.

School Groups can enjoy a number of educational programs, including Workshops on General Ecology, Plant Succession, Forest Values, Seeds and Seed Dispersal, Insects of Field and Forest, Butterflies, Animal Signs, and Tree Identification. Some programs are seasonal. Programs can be adapted for most grade levels.

School and other groups can also enjoy a Moonlight Walk. 15 or more people comprise a group.

Hours: Open every day during daylight hours.

Admission:

Membership is required to use the Sanctuary. No additional charge for admission. Some programs have a material fee. Individual summer programs have an additional fee. School Programs FREE.

Group Reservations: At least 4 weeks in advance.

Lunch: Picnic area available. Bring a blanket.

Handicapped Access: Not accessible.

Directions: From Route Rt. 611 go west on Spring Hill Road for ½ mile. Turn right (north) onto Sunnyside Road. Go ½ mile and turn left at the Mariton sign. 60 minutes north of Philadelphia.
