In 1971 The Institute for Contemporary Art (originally The Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc.) was founded with the mission of transforming abandoned and under-utilized New York City buildings into exhibition, performance and studio spaces for contemporary artists whose work was disregarded by the City's museum establishment.

The Institute now operates two internationally acclaimed centers: The Clocktower Gallery in lower Manhattan, and P.S. 1 Museum at the address above.

The P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center has recently been renovated and serves as an advocate for new ideas and trends in contemporary art through its role as an exhibition space rather than a collecting institution.

Offering more than fifty exhibitions each year, P.S. 1 presents new artists and new, challenging work of established artists to the public. The full range of media are represented, from paint and sculpture to electronic and even music and performance programming.

Visit P.S. 1's website, linked above, for a current schedule and the lates news.

Groups are welcome for Guided Tours or Self-Guided visits. Adult groups must have a minimum of 10 people and School Groups (K-12) a minimum of 15. Groups of more than 25 and 30, respectively, will be broken into 2 groups.

P.S. 1 also operates the Clocktower Gallery, residing at the top floors of an historic municipal building in lower Manhattan. It currently is the home of P.S.1's radio station, WPS1.
