The recently reopened Queens Wildlife Center is devoted to magnificent North American animals. Divided into "Wild" and "domestic" areas, this zoo houses some 250 animals of 40 species. Visitors will explore pockets of North American habitat, from the great American Plains to a rocky California Coast, to a Northeastern Forest. Mountain lions, bobcats, bison, coyotes, black bears, elk, sea lions, and other animals will be found here. A great aviary and a real marsh habitat are homes for native wildlife and a wide variety of birds.

In the domestic area, kids (and adults) can meet and touch sheep, ducks, goats, rabbits, and other animals. There is an Education Center, where people of all ages can learn about wildlife and plants.

The Zoo also offers excellent School Programs for students in grades pre - K through 12. Animals and You (pre-K and K): teaches about our important relationships with wildlife. Students have fun comparing similarities and differences between themselves and animals; Magnificent Mammals (1 - 3): uses hands-on activities and live animal observations to study animal characteristics. Includes an exciting predator/prey activity; Wildlife in Your Backyard (4 - 8): examines the wildlife living with us and why a healthy environment is beneficial to both animal and man. Other programs are available. In addition, Center will work with teachers to create Customized Programs to suit students' needs.

Programs last 60 - 90 minutes. Class size is limited to 25 for pre - K and K, and 35 for grades 1 through 12. Programs are held rain or shine. Teachers Workshops in wildlife and the environment are also available several times per year. They offer an exceptional value that many teachers will want to check out. Note that educational programs are subject to change without notice. The programs described here are representative of the types of programs available.
