Located in Heckscher Park in Huntington Village, the Heckscher Museum has been described by the New York Times as "one of the primary small museums in the country with an international reputation." Featuring a small but distinguished selection of works spanning 500 years of European and American art, the Museum's growing permanent collection includes works by Renaissance masters to the most recent contemporary artists. 19th and 20th century American landscapes highlight the 1,500-piece collection.. With an ongoing schedule of special exhibitions and regularly changing permanent installations, Heckscher offers a broad and balanced view of historical, modern, and contemporary art. Many works are of special significance to Long Island. Individuals and families can participate in a diverse program of day and evening workshops, illustrated lectures, concerts, and other activities throughout the year, in conjunction with the permanent collection and each of the temporary exhibitions. School Discovery Programs offer a variety of educational activities for school groups. Discovery I, for Elementary School students, and Discovery II, for Junior High and High School students, each offer excellent, hands-on activities designed to stimulate creative thought and examination of subjects related to the arts. Discover an Art Museum, for Nursery and Kindergarten classes, introduces children to the wonders of an art museum through a variety of participatory activities such as storytelling, creative dramatics, art making, and more. Programs take about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
