Owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lyndhurst is one of America's finest Gothic Revival mansions. The 67-acre estate, overlooking the Hudson River, features sweeping lawns accented with shrubs and specimen trees, a rose garden, carriage house, children's playhouse, Rose Cottage, a partially restored greenhouse -- once the largest in America, and, finally, the mansion itself.

An architectural masterpiece, Lyndhurst was home to three families of influential businessmen: William Paulding, former New York City mayor; merchant, George Merritt; and railroad magnate, Jay Gould.

This is a beautiful place to stroll, make photographs, or enjoy the several annual events that take place. Students of architecture, horticulture, landscape design, or the fine arts will find a trip to Lyndhurst well worth while.

Group tours are available for adults, and Lyndhurst is a wonderful resource for Elementary, Secondary, and College School Groups. Seen But Not Heard: The Children of Lyndhurst (grades K thru 5), is a 60 minute program with hands-on activities that focus on the 19th century lifestyle from the viewpoint of the children who grew up at Lyndhurst. Families of Lyndhurst: Evolution of an Estate (grades 6 - 12), explores the architecture and interior furnishings of Lyndhurst to reveal the lives of the families that lived here and how they reflect important movements in American history .
