I've said or implied it elsewhere in this book, and I'll say it again: Kids get the best museums! In children's museums you can actually do "stuff." The Children's Museum of Manhattan is one of the best, combining viewing and doing in five floors of exhibitions and activity centers.

CMOM is a great resource for families and groups, where children will learn new and exciting things that they can use in their lives now and as they grow.

Exhibitions and Activity Centers include the Urban Tree House. Housed in the Sussman Environmental Center, it combines the fun of an outdoor play area with three stories of interactive displays and activities based on the themes of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink. The The Time-Warner Media Center is a hands-on television production and editing studio where visitors become newscasters, camera operators, actors, and animators while making their own videos. There are many others, including the Helena Rubinstein Literacy Center, Family Learning Center, and SoundsFun -- an introduction to music and instruments, to name a few. Some of these exhibits change from time to time. Call for a calendar, which will also highlight the many special events that take place here throughout the year.

School Programs for grades pre-K through 9 cover a very wide variety of subjects that help children understand the world around them, including the people who live in it. From exploring environments to collecting to poetry, ecology, and even "intelligent tv watching," there is something for everyone.

CMOM also offers Programs in Schools, where professional educators and artists will visit a class for 60 - 90 minutes and deliver programs on subjects like those above.

This is a popular place, located in Manhattan. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to book reservations as far in advance as possible. Payment for group programs must be made 4 weeks in advance, and cancellations made 2 weeks in advance if a refund is desired.
