Just about everyone has probably heard of this outstanding seaport museum village. Occupying 17 acres along the Mystic River, the Seaport contains tall ships, a complex of historic buildings, a preservation shipyard, planetarium, and many exhibit buildings.
Stepping back into the 19th century, visitors can see actual restoration work being done on the ships, and craftsmen practicing their skills. With over 160 activities each year, the Seaport is alive with programs for individuals, families and groups. Just a few of these include Tours, Workshops, Exhibits, Symposia, Clambakes, Sail Education, Schooner Cruises, and Antique Boat Rendezvous. Plan a long day here, at least. You will not want to leave!
School Programs consist of 90-minute long Highlight Tours or Thematic Study Programs. The Tours can be general in nature or focus on a particular aspect of the Seaport such as Whaling, Fishing, or 19th-century Coastal Community Life. The Study Programs take 3 hours and are designed to involve the students in 19th century experiences and small hands-on activities. Five major themes are available. Programs are adaptable for all grades.
For grades 4 - 12, Overnight Programs involve groups of 20 - 40 students in a number of hands-on activities and programs while staying aboard the square-rigged ship Joseph Conrad.
